3 Biggest Factors Affecting Bathroom Renovation Costs

Planning a bathroom renovation? An understanding of what drives the costs can help you make informed decisions that align with your budget and vision. Whether you're aiming for opulence or simply refreshing an outdated space, certain factors can significantly impact the price. In this post, we'll dive into the three biggest factors that affect the cost of your bathroom renovation and share insights on how to navigate them effectively.

The Specification of Finishes, Fittings, and Fixtures
The first major factor is the selections you make—the tiles you buy, the fittings, the fixtures. Not only can they cost significantly more to buy, but they can also have an indirect impact on the cost of installation. For example, if you choose large-format tiles, mosaics, or something with an intricate pattern, they may cost more than double the installation price of conventional ceramic tiles.

If you select an in-wall cistern for your toilet with a wall-hung toilet pan, it will look amazing, but it costs a lot more to frame out, install the steel supports, and prep to hide it seamlessly in the wall. And so, not only is it a more expensive unit, but the installation cost is another thousand dollars more on top because we have to frame it out, install something in the wall, and there's a lot more work involved, particularly if you get a wall-hung pan.

Plumbing and Drainage
The second factor is moving plumbing around and adjusting things. But I would suggest that if you're going to save money, probably save money in the finishes, because getting your bathroom feeling just right and the space feeling good is worth a lot more than the cost to move plumbing. It's not a huge cost in the scheme of the whole bathroom renovation. So I always help people get the layout and the feel of it just right. That adds so much more value than the cost to move plumbing, even if it's a sewer stack. We would prefer to move it and get your bathroom feeling great because you're in it every day.

Quality of the Tradespeople
The third factor is the quality of the workmanship, and this is something that we won't compromise on. We've got amazing waterproofers, and we've got some of the best tilers available. If you're going to compromise on something, I would suggest compromising on the finishes and fittings because there's nothing worse than an amazing piece of stone laid badly. So we would rather cut the cost on finishes but install them perfectly. That adds so much more value to your bathroom.
