FAQs for Inner West Construction Advisory
Thinking about building or renovating in Sydney’s Inner West? Construction advisory can help you avoid costly mistakes, make informed decisions, and keep your project on track. Here are some common questions and straight-up answers to help you understand how it works—and how it can help.
-
Ballast Point has deep, hands-on experience in both design and construction. We’re unique in that we integrate design, engineering, and construction expertise under one roof. With two licensed builders (30+ and 40+ years’ experience), a skilled design team, and broad knowledge across various construction methodologies, we bring serious capability to the table.
We're also “open source” — meaning we’re happy to collaborate with other engineers, architects, and builders. You don’t need to engage us for the whole project; we’re happy to come in and solve a specific issue as a consultant.
-
Construction advisors can provide early-stage input on feasibility and buildability, helping avoid costly mistakes later. For example, we can flag complex structural issues early — like where new beams might affect ceiling heights or where retaining structures may be required — so you’re not caught off guard during construction.
We also challenge and rationalise design decisions (e.g. drainage for multiple roofs), improving both function and cost-efficiency. We offer a second opinion on costs outside of competitive tendering, helping reduce distortions and giving you a realistic view of the market.
-
Not always — it depends on the complexity of the project and the experience of your design team. If your architect or designer is relatively inexperienced, or facing a technical challenge, having a construction advisor on board can be invaluable to ensure the design is practical and buildable.
-
While compliance with building codes (such as the NCC/BCA and Australian Standards) is typically the responsibility of the architect, our advisory team will certainly flag any issues we see. Our architecture and planning teams are well-versed in these standards, and during the advisory process, we’ll call out anything that looks off.
-
Yes, we do. Most people come to us for a full service — from planning and approvals through to engineering and construction. That said, we’re also flexible. We can collaborate with other builders or design teams and fill in gaps where needed.
-
The earlier, the better — ideally at concept stage. But it also depends on your team’s experience. You might also bring in a construction advisor when:
You’re stuck between conflicting advice from your builder and architect.
You’re facing delays or construction issues.
You’re dealing with a building defect or need an expert opinion/report.
You’ve submitted to builders but aren’t receiving quotes — often due to unclear documentation.
Advisory can de-risk your project at any stage, but especially helpful when things aren’t going smoothly.
-
Construction advisory is focused on providing expert input and problem-solving — often around buildability, costs, or technical issues. Project management, on the other hand, is broader: it involves coordinating the whole team, overseeing timelines, and directing the delivery of the project.
There’s some overlap, but advisory is more consultative and technical, whereas project management is about running the show.
